(Old review, scroll down for new review) I've had an iPhone 6 with this chipset and it has been quite great to use back then, but this is a 2022 user review, so I'll keep it at that. The basics are slightly sluggish but work such as calling, FaceTiming and texting, and also offer a slight challenge for thermals, I do remember also using maps and it being decently sluggish. it also becomes slightly warm to the touch after a decent amount of usage. Gaming is out of the question as most games don't run (soul knight for example, fails to run and it's not very intensive for a game). perhaps very light games would run decently on a8 devices (unsure about iPad mini 4 with its slightly boosted a8 with 2 gigabytes of ram). Overall, this chip offers decent performance but is now disadvantaged due to it's age. Update: I have had to use my iPhone 6 again as a backup due to the destruction of my iPhone SE 3rd generation ;-;. and I am very impressed with how well it has held up. I take back a bit of what I said as the A8 because it is still pretty snappy and quick on iOS 12.5.5. I use it for music, youtube, web browsing, maps, calls and FaceTime and it does all this surprisingly well. Slightly demanding games are still out of the question (asphalt 8 plays well but burns battery and turns my phone into a personal stove). Battery life is still…. Eh (my phone battery is in good condition) but definitely holds it charge if it isn’t on all the time. I am so impressed by what this 2014 phone can do thanks to the A8 chip. Its not far from sluggish but Its no slouch either. A champion of a phone, i might not even replace my main phone because i’m so impressed by this phone. I might stick with this until i can afford the new SE again. iPhone 6 has a special place in my heart. (Just my personal experience) P.S: Please don’t buy this phone if you’re looking for cheap alternatives, too old and unsupported by apple. There are much better options available from apple (second hand or low range) or some cheap new androids like the Samsung A line.

Pros

  • Basic tasks run surprisingly well
  • (New) Held up really well for 2014 tech
  • iOS 12 has held up impressively well

Cons

  • Old chipset
  • Battery life below average compared to newer offerings

I’m using a iPhone 6 for 1 week beacause I want to do some benchmarks with it.the processor can handle some small games and even some big games like free fire.the problem of it is that I heats so quick and it uses too much energy and battery goes low by only 1 hour gaming. It doesn’t heat only on games, but also watching YouTube in 720p (that heats the phone slowly and the battery in about 4 hours) and 1080p (that heats the phone in 20 minutes and the battery in 3 hours)

Pros

  • GPU can handle some big games on HD
  • CPU is decent

Cons

  • Overheating after gaming
  • Overheating after 1080p video

General info

Supports 64-bit
Apple A8
A 32-bit operating system can only support up to 4GB of RAM. 64-bit allows more than 4GB, giving increased performance. It also allows you to run 64-bit apps.
With integrated graphics you don’t need to buy a separate graphics card.
Small semiconductors provide better performance and reduced power consumption. Chipsets with a higher number of transistors, semiconductor components of electronic devices, offer more computational power. A small form factor allows more transistors to fit on a chip, therefore increasing its performance.
The clock speed of the graphics processing unit (GPU).
has 5G support
Apple A8
The fifth-generation wireless technology delivers higher speeds and lower latency than the previous, fourth-generation tech.
GPU turbo

Unknown. Help us by suggesting a value.

When the GPU is running below its limitations, it can boost to a higher clock speed in order to give increased performance.
DirectX is used in video games, with newer versions supporting better graphics and features. The latest version is DirectX 12 Ultimate, which includes support for ray tracing, mesh shaders, and variable rate shading (VRS).
OpenGL ES is used for games on mobile devices such as smartphones. Newer versions support better graphics.
Some apps use OpenCL to apply the power of the graphics processing unit (GPU) for non-graphical computing. Newer versions introduce more functionality and better performance.

Performance

CPU speed

2 x 1.4 GHz

The CPU speed indicates how many processing cycles per second can be executed by a CPU, considering all of its cores (processing units). It is calculated by adding the clock rates of each core or, in the case of multi-core processors employing different microarchitectures, of each group of cores.
CPU threads

2 threads

More threads result in faster performance and better multitasking.
Using big.LITTLE technology, a chip can switch between two sets of processor cores to maximize performance and battery life. For example, when playing a game the more powerful cores will be used to increase performance, whereas checking email will use the less powerful cores to maximize battery life.
Uses HMP
Apple A8
Heterogeneous Multi-Processing (HMP) is a more advanced version of big.LITTLE technology. In this setup, a processor can utilize all cores at the same time, or just a single core for low-intensity tasks. This can provide powerful performance or increased battery life respectively.
turbo clock speed

Unknown. Help us by suggesting a value.

When the CPU is running below its limitations, it can boost to a higher clock speed in order to give increased performance.
L2 cache

Unknown. Help us by suggesting a value.

A larger L2 cache results in faster CPU and system-wide performance.

Memory

RAM speed

Unknown. Help us by suggesting a value.

It can support faster memory, which will give quicker system performance.
DDR memory version

Unknown. Help us by suggesting a value.

DDR (Double Data Rate) memory is the most common type of RAM. Newer versions of DDR memory support higher maximum speeds and are more energy-efficient.
maximum memory amount

Unknown. Help us by suggesting a value.

The maximum amount of memory (RAM) supported.
maximum memory bandwidth

Unknown. Help us by suggesting a value.

This is the maximum rate that data can be read from or stored into memory.
More memory channels increases the speed of data transfer between the memory and the CPU.
eMMC version

Unknown. Help us by suggesting a value.

A higher version of eMMC allows faster memory interfaces, having a positive effect on the performance of a device. For example, when transferring files from your computer to the internal storage over USB.
Error-correcting code memory can detect and correct data corruption. It is used when is it essential to avoid corruption, such as scientific computing or when running a server.

Features

The system on a chip (SoC) has an integrated LTE cellular chip. LTE is capable of downloading at faster speeds than older, 3G technology.
download speed

Unknown. Help us by suggesting a value.

This is the maximum download speed supported. In reality, the download speed will usually be lower, as it will be affected by other factors (such as your home/mobile network speeds).
upload speed

Has TrustZone
Apple A8 (Apple Cyclone)
A technology integrated into the processor to secure the device for use with features such as mobile payments and streaming video using digital rights management (DRM).
Multithreading technology (such as Intel's Hyperthreading or AMD's Simultaneous Multithreading) provides increased performance by splitting each of the processor's physical cores into virtual cores, also known as threads. This way, each core can run two instruction streams at once.
Has NX bit
Apple A8 (Apple Cyclone)
NX bit helps protect the computer from malicious attacks.
