Unstable city in a beautiful place.

Miami is a beautiful city in every way that is not intentional. Wonderful nature that's poorly integrated into most of the city, well-supplied public transport that has been neutered and diminished to some of the worst in the developed world in anti public service political movement, radically high cost of living with a collapse of housing access anywhere in the main city, inconsistent protections for tenants and political punishment if in the public sector (especially if queer with current trends and firings); it's a beautiful, lovely place so comically messed up that the city is trying to gather the homeless and put them on an island in a camp. I've lived here my whole life. I love this place, but the structure built on it is structurally disastrous. Everything is getting more and more expensive with amongst the worst wage performance in American cities. The city consistently uses political action to try and aid its progress (higher wage policies, better environmental spending to deal with the increasing flooding) that, due to the power structure of the state, is ignored. Even winning, voted policies unwanted by the governor are scrapped with no recourse. It's the kind of place that's going to work only with much stronger economic assurances than other options and provides little if anything. Even its newer boom from the tech influx is, well, image. There is no increase in overall income for actual citizens, worse rent prices, higher property costs, gentrification dismantling most of the traditional city: it's a boom for the kind of people who don't care about quality of life because they're successful enough to not have to. I want to love it here, because I love the place, but it's a mess in every way and worsening consistently.

Pros

  • Great food
  • Accessible nature
  • Comparatively high charity for healthcare

Cons

  • High rent, low protections
  • Inconsistent, absent public transport
  • No walkability outside of small tourist spots, no cover
  • Low wages, slow increases
  • Poor infrastructure planing, high road costs with low prospects
