It does have an issue that I want to make everyone aware of. First, this camera has a steep learning curve. I bought a book to help me climb the curve a little faster. There are many controls within the camera settings as defined by the software. Second, I've had an issue with the mirror getting stuck in the up position twice. The first time I took it to the dealer and it was repaired in about 15 minutes. The second time I looked through several blogs and found a fix that took about a minute. From what I can tell this is a known issue for newer Nikon DSLR's. If you find yourself in this situation try this fix (worked for me, hope it works for you); -Remove the lens -Look on the left front side of the shutter box and see a small black flat lever sticking out about an eighth of an inch (its spring loaded) -Using your finger gently push this lever down until it stays depressed in the down position -Check for crud on the mirror -Reinstall the lens -Turn the camera on -Depress the shutter button one time Sensor. The D850 functions far beyond expectations in many shooting environments. The combination of available high ISO settings and high resolution sensor allow you to take great pictures in low light that many cameras cannot even contemplate. The high resolution sensor permits extreme cropping and or large prints without pixilation. Weight. It's weight does not lend itself to convenient use while traveling, however, for me, the picture quality makes it worth lugging around. The camera body itself weighs about 2.2 pounds. Adding the battery grip runs it up to about 3 1/2 pounds. With my Sigma 24 to 70 zoom the wait goes up to 5 1/2 pounds. That's a lot to be lugging around your neck but it depends on how bad you want good pictures. The D850 to the Z9; the Z9 weighs .8 lb more. Battery life. The D850 will take approximately 1800 shots on one internal battery. Mirrorless cameras run about 1/3 of that at best. I would really like to go mirrorless but the tech hasn't developed enough to compete with the D850 battery life. Plus I just don't like carrying around a pocket full of batteries to feed my camera. While on this subject I wanna comment on batteries as they relate to the mirror hanging issue. Some owners believe the mirror hang issue is related to battery type, condition, temperature or aftermarket status. I did not find this true in my situation. Knowing what I do would I buy it again, yes.

has a built-in focus motor
Nikon D850
Sony Alpha a7 III
The focus motor moves the lens in order to autofocus. For system cameras, having a focus motor in the camera's body allows you to use a wide range of lenses, including lenses which do not have their own focus motor. For compact cameras, a focus motor is usually built-in.

Optics

sensor size

Full frame

Full frame

One of the most important aspects of a camera is the size of its sensor. A larger sensor will capture more light, which results in improved low-light performance, dynamic range, and general image quality.
lens mount

Nikon F

Sony E

The more focus points the more flexibility in picking which part of the scene to focus on. They also give the image sensor a better probability in identifying the right area of the scene to focus on in more automatic modes.
The number of megapixels determines the resolution of the images captured with the main camera. A higher megapixel count means that the camera is capable of capturing more details. However, the megapixel count is not the only important element determining the quality of an image.
maximum ISO

25600 ISO

51200 ISO

With a higher light sensitivity (ISO level), the sensor absorbs more light. This can be used to capture moving objects using a fast shutter speed, or to take images in low light without using a flash.
maximum expanded ISO

102400 ISO

204800 ISO

Expanded ISO allows you to go beyond the native ISO. It does this by digitally enhancing the image output. The resulting image will have less quality than when staying within the native ISO range, but it can be useful in certain situations.
has sensor shift stabilization
Nikon D850
Sony Alpha a7 III
With sensor shift, the image sensor (rather than the lens) moves to counterbalance any vibration of the camera. This means the image will be stabilised regardless of what lens is being used.
The number of frames per second that can be captured in continuous drive mode when using the mechanical shutter.
has AF tracking
Nikon D850
Sony Alpha a7 III
With AF tracking, once you choose the subject and press the shutter release part way down, as the subject moves, the autofocus will follow it. No more out of focus shots.

Videography

video recording (main camera)

2160 x 30 fps

2160 x 30 fps

The maximum resolution available for videos shot with the main camera. Although it may be possible to choose among other frame rates, those recordings usually have lower resolutions.
Has phase-detection autofocus for videos
Nikon D850
Sony Alpha a7 III

Nikon D850
Sony Alpha a7 III
A stereo microphone allows to record audio files or movies in stereo without an external microphone.
Has timelapse function
Nikon D850
Sony Alpha a7 III
A timelapse shows a long passage of time sped up. A series of photographs taken from the same position over a long period is joined together to create a short video. It is great way to capture things like the setting sun, or clouds moving across the sky.
movie bitrate

Unknown. Help us by suggesting a value. (Nikon D850)

100 Mbps

The higher the movie recording bitrate the better the movie quality with more and crispier details and less compression artifacts.
More microphones result in better sound quality and enable the device to filter out background noise.

Battery

Battery life (CIPA)

1840 shots

610 shots

CIPA is an independent, standard measurement that determines how many shots a camera can take before the battery dies.
