PlayStation VR2 is a great companion to your PS5

The PlayStation VR2 truly feels like the next-generation of VR for gaming, offering an upgrade in almost every way to the PS VR1. Some of my favourite aspects of the PS VR2 is the high resolution OLED + HDR display, which provides a truly immersive experience when navigating dark hallways in Resident Evil, or a bright and colourful environment in Horizon Call of the Mountain. The headset also uses eye tracking, which when implemented through foveated rendering, allows games to perform at their best and take an even bigger advantage of the PS5's power. Aside from the display, I am a massive fan of the Sense Controllers that come with the PS VR2. Coming from the HTC Vive Wands and Valve Indes Controllers, the Sense controllers really do feel like the best design so far, by being comfortable to hold and providing more immersive interactions with the adaptive triggers and haptic feedback. I've also found that the orb shape allows you to unclench your hand without dropping the controller, which means you don't have to use a similar wrist strap to the Valve Index controllers to do the same thing. Although it doesn't have a wireless setup, PlayStation definitely makes up for that by taking full advantage of the PS5 hardware, to provide some of the most memorable and immersive experiences in VR. In the first year, the PlayStation VR2 has received free updates to some of the best AAA games on PS5, allowing players to experience the complete games of Resident Evil Village, and Gran Turismo 7, with Resident Evil 4 Remake announced for late 2023. One of the downsides to the library, compared with the Quest, is how PS VR2 doesn't provide any backwards compatibility with titles previously released for the PS VR1. This means players will need to rely on developers to upgrade their games to support PS VR2 officially, if they want a chance to play them on PS VR2. It's not all bad news for the library though, as there's already over 200 games either released or announced for the PS VR2, so there's definitely a lot of games to choose from, including highlights such as Syanapse, Foglands, Horizon Call of the Mountain, C-Smash VRS and the upcoming Aces of Thunder. Overall, if you're interested in VR for gaming, I think PS VR2 is a must have headset, with an already huge slate of amazing experiences built or rebuilt for VR, that take full advantage of all of the features that makes PS VR2 stand out to other VR headsets.

Pros

  • OLED HDR display provides some incredible vibrant colours
  • Easy single cable setup
  • Sense controllers feel comfortable and highly immersive with its haptic feedback and triggers
  • Eye tracking & foveated rendering
  • Many AAA games available in the first year

Cons

  • Lack of backwards compatibility with PS VR1 games
