JBL Boombox review: specs and price

The JBL Boombox speaker is one of the most powerful Bluetooth speakers currently on the market, with four active transducers and two JBL bass radiators that deliver major sound with heart-pounding bass. If that’s not enough, though, it can also connect to over 100 JBL Connect+ enabled speakers for even more sound and power. Multipoint is included, too, allowing you to connect to several devices at a time so that you and your friends can take turns being the music DJ.

This portable Bluetooth speaker has a tough exterior to guard against accidental bumps and drops, making it ideal for the outdoors. You needn’t worry about accidental water damage either, as it has an IPX7 waterproof rating that protects it from the rain or even being completely submerged in water. Its built-in rechargeable battery supports up to 24 hours of straight playtime, so it is perfect for scenic all-day jam sessions. It even has a unique outdoor sound mode that will increase the range of the music being played and pump up the bass to impressive volumes.

Boombox 1 Blows Versions 2 & 3 Away!

Future versions do not necessarily lead to a better sounding product so read on ... Unfortunately JBL's obsession for it's Boombox being the most powerful portable Bluetooth Speaker as other competing products hit the market did mean that compromises had to be made in return for a higher power rating (Watts). Hence the awesomely impressive drive units used in Boombox 1 had to be replaced carrying this range forward. Sonically this was disastrous. Boombox 2 sadly suffered from a distinct lack of Bass capability, with mids/highs being equally as poor, just for the sake of sounding louder. Boombox 3 has addressed that issue with more emphasis on the Bass end of things and is even louder still, but even v3 cannot stand up to the meticulously balanced big sound from the Version 1 which never ever lacked Bass being deep, punchy and all encompassing. When properly EQ'd via a 10 band Equaliser within an app such as N7 music player MP3s played through Boombox 1 will give a massive sound of the highest fidelity both inside and out. I am a loud music lover so long as it sounds just as good full-on as it does at lower levels. I used to run Sound Systems in Clubs and at Warehouse Raves in the 90s and so I think I know a thing or two about what sounds right and what doesn't. Full-on the Boombox 1 is effing loud with no distortion at any power level. When I am playing it at near-on full volume in my back garden my neighbours are convinced that I have brought my home stereo outside, such is the presence of the Sound-Stage from this speaker. It is a Beast and puts out an unbelievably large sound that I am not capable of describing. I fell in love with this speaker a few years ago when I picked it up from Curry's and suspect it will be a long while before I find a better product worth cheating on my first love for. I also have a Naim Muso for my living room which is very good for pretty much 3x the money but which does not best it. So if you get the chance grab one of these Version 1s and I guarantee you will not be disappointed! ... Bear in mind that if you are streaming Spotify etc. you will have a 'Flat Sound', compared to playing MP3s via a Music Player (such as N7) with perfectly adjusted equalisation in the way I have described above.

Pros

  • The best sound in the range by a mile.
  • Very loud. Big balanced sound stage
  • Sounds as good outside as in.

Cons

  • Have owned this for around 5;years now and still can't think of one.

Design

The first number of the IP rating refers to protection against dust, while the second number refers to protection against liquid. E.g. a first number of 6 denotes that it is completely dustproof, and a second number of 7 denotes that the device can withstand full immersion in water.
volume

24628.6 cm³

Devices with neodymium magnets are lighter and more powerful than those which use ferrite magnets. They also have more bass and clear high notes.
There is a control panel on the device body, so you can easily access the volume control or remote without having to interact with a cable or another device it's connected to.

Audio output power is based on the number of speakers and their power in watts. High audio output power results in loud, clear sounds.
A passive radiator is a type of driver (speaker) that doesn't have a voice coil and a magnet. The sound vibrations produced by a passive radiator depend on its mass and the size of its enclosure. It is usually used in combination with a woofer to produce deep bass tones.
number of microphones

Unknown. Help us by suggesting a value.

More microphones result in better sound quality and enable the device to filter out background noise.
These microphones are designed to filter out background noise from the desired sound. Especially useful in noisy environments.
Signal-to-noise ratio is a measure that compares the level of a desired signal (meaningful information) to the level of background noise (unwanted signal), the bigger the less perceived noise.
