Tablets combine the best of smartphone technology and laptop features in one portable package that’s powered by enough RAM to allow you to work remotely, play games, and browse the internet with ease. They’re smaller, thinner, and much lighter than laptops yet provide a larger display than your traditional smartphone, making them ideal for those after a truly portable yet powerful device.

As a device that you likely slip into your briefcase or carry with you in your purse, you’ll need to ensure that it’s truly portable. This means taking a look at the size of the tablet itself and its weight and other factors that influence how durable it is. The most portable tablets aren’t simply the smallest tablets, and here’s why.

Tablet size comparison

Bigger doesn’t always mean better or even more powerful, and smaller doesn’t necessarily mean that a tablet will be more portable. To figure out which tablets are the most portable and easy to use on-the-go, you’ll need to consider a few factors, such as weight and dimensions. To determine which tablet is the best for you, consider where you’ll store it (in your briefcase, in a laptop case, etc.), whether or not it’ll fit into your current backpack, how large the screen needs to be, and an ideal weight that would be feasible for you to carry around with ease.

What’s the ideal size for tablets? 7-inch tablets are the most portable in terms of sheer size. They’re small enough to slip into pretty much any purse, bag, or briefcase, and they’re usually lightweight, too. However, if you need a larger screen and more power, it’s best to opt for a 10-inch tablet; most can handle graphics-heavy games, productivity software, and streaming. Thumb-typing with a 10-inch tablet is still feasible as well, making them portable enough to use with one hand on the metro or while waiting in line for coffee.

Damage-resistant glass

As a portable device, tablets see much more wear and tear than a traditional computer. We purchase protectors for our phones and laptops to keep them safe, and it’s a good idea to do the same with your tablet. However, when comparing the most portable tablets, be sure to look for tablets with damage-resistant glass.

This type of glass, such as Corning Gorilla Glass or Asahi Dragontrail Glass, is thin, lightweight, and can withstand high force levels. This is an especially important feature if you’re going to use the tablet out in the field while at work or are looking for a portable tablet for kids. Speaking of working out in the field, if you use your tablet for on-the-go job tasks or frequently take it out with you to job sites, consider opting for a dust- and water-resistant tablet. Water-resistant devices can resist the penetration of water, such as powerful water jets and rain droplets, but not being submerged into water.

Battery

If you’re looking for a portable tablet, then chances are it’s because you want to carry it around with you wherever you go. In that case, you’ll also need to factor in the tablet’s battery power and battery life. Typically, tablets can last from around 4 to 10 hours if used continuously under moderate load. Battery power directly determines how long your device can last on one charge. Whereas the average battery power of a tablet is somewhere around 6,000mAh, the top-performing tablets can have a battery power of at least 12,000mAh.
