Microsoft Xbox Series X review: specs and price

The Xbox Series X offers vast gains in gaming performance and features over its predecessor, the Xbox One. An 8-core 3.8 GHz processor combines with 16GB of GDDR6 RAM and a 1.82 GHz GPU with 52 compute units (CUs) to deliver an incredible 12 teraflops (TFLOPS) of floating-point performance.

All these numbers can be confusing, but looking at the previous generation Xbox puts things in perspective. It had an 853 MHz GPU with 12 CUs that produced just 1.31 TFLOPS of floating performance, meaning that the Xbox Series X is much more powerful in terms of graphics power. The result is higher-fidelity graphics delivered in native 4K resolution at frame rates of up to 120 fps. It also allows for ray tracing, an advanced light rendering technique that provides incredibly realistic lighting.

Aside from a boost in graphics, Microsoft has introduced impressive new features for next-gen console gamers. 3D audio lets you pinpoint sounds like never before, and Quick Resume lets you switch between different running games practically instantly. Load times are also significantly faster, thanks to the use of SSD storage. Aside from gaming, the Xbox Series X doubles as a multimedia hub, with a 4K Blu-ray drive and apps for all the major streaming services.

      Performance

      CPU speed

      8 x 3.8 GHz

The CPU speed indicates how many processing cycles per second can be executed by a CPU, considering all of its cores (processing units). It is calculated by adding the clock rates of each core or, in the case of multi-core processors employing different microarchitectures, of each group of cores.
Floating-point performance is a measurement of the raw processing power of the GPU.
      RAM

      16GB

Random-access memory (RAM) is a form of memory used to store working data and machine code. Having more RAM is particularly useful for multitasking, allowing you to run more programs at once or have more tabs open in your browser.
The clock speed of the graphics processing unit (GPU).
