Sony PlayStation 5 Digital Edition review: specs and price

Compared to Sony’s last console, the PlayStation 4, the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition offers vastly improved graphics and fantastic new features. It’s powered by incredible hardware; there’s an 8-core 3.5GHz processor, 16GB of GDDR6 RAM, and a 2.23GHz GPU with 36 compute units (CUs) that delivers a massive 10.28 teraflops (TFLOPS) of floating-point performance.

Not sure what those numbers mean? Consider that the PS4 had an 800MHz GPU that produced just 1.84 TFLOPS, and you get an idea of just how much more powerful the PS5 Digital Edition is. All of these gains are put to good use, too, as the PS5 Digital Edition can deliver breathtaking graphics in native 4K resolution at variable frame rates of up to 120 fps. It also supports ray tracing technology so that game developers can employ incredibly-realistic lighting and shadow effects in real time.

The PS5 Digital Edition also has new features to create a more immersive gaming experience. 3D audio lets you hear the direction of sounds (potentially hundreds at a time) with pinpoint accuracy, and the new DualSense controller has advanced haptics and adaptive triggers that create realistic tension in the shoulder buttons.

As you might guess from the name, the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition does not come with an optical drive (unlike the standard PlayStation 5). However, if you’re someone who prefers to buy their games digitally and stream their movies and shows from apps like Netflix, the PS5 Digital Edition is the ideal choice.

Performance

CPU speed

8 x 3.5 GHz

The CPU speed indicates how many processing cycles per second can be executed by a CPU, considering all of its cores (processing units). It is calculated by adding the clock rates of each core or, in the case of multi-core processors employing different microarchitectures, of each group of cores.
Floating-point performance is a measurement of the raw processing power of the GPU.
RAM

16GB

Random-access memory (RAM) is a form of memory used to store working data and machine code. Having more RAM is particularly useful for multitasking, allowing you to run more programs at once or have more tabs open in your browser.
The clock speed of the graphics processing unit (GPU).
supports ray tracing
Sony PlayStation 5 Digital Edition
Ray tracing is an advanced light rendering technique that provides more realistic lighting, shadows, and reflections in games.
I/O throughput refers to the bandwidth of the internal storage. Storage that supports faster data transmission speeds results in quicker load times.
Newer versions of GDDR memory offer improvements such as higher transfer rates that give increased performance.
Is an NVMe SSD
Sony PlayStation 5 Digital Edition
NVMe SSDs use the PCIe interface, which has a higher bandwidth than the SATA interface. This results in much faster read/write speeds compared to SSDs which use the SATA interface.
A higher memory bandwidth means the memory can be accessed faster and therefore data can be retrieved quicker, having a positive effect on the performance.
