Pulse oximeter sensorYour blood oxygen level is a measurement how much oxygen is reaching your muscles. It is important because low levels mean that you will become easily fatigued during exercise. The more exercise you do, the better your blood oxygen levels will become.

With the introduction of new features including advanced heart rate monitoring, fall detection, and blood oxygen sensors, smartwatches are becoming smarter than ever. While that means enhanced functionality for users, it also means that the battery life of these wearables needs to be able to keep up with all of the technology packed inside of the device. Which smartwatches have the longest battery life and what other features should you be looking out for when comparing watches? We’ve got the details.

Battery power vs. battery life

Battery power is the measure of the battery’s capacity and it’s measured in milliampere-hours (mAh), a unit that indicates how much electric power can be used over time. A battery with more mAh translates into longer battery life when measured alone (this can change when you factor in other features such as GPS, sleep tracking, etc.). Top-tier smartwatches such as the Xiaomi Mi Watch and the Honor Watch GS Pro boast battery powers of over 500mAh, but that’s a bit higher than the average for most smartwatches (the popular Apple Watch Series 6, for example, has a battery power of just over 300mAh).

Battery life in days

What you’ll be more interested in checking out when comparing the best smartwatches is the battery life in days. Most smartwatches offer a battery life long enough to get you through a full day with average use. This means that it’ll last anywhere from 12 to 24 hours after a full charge while you use apps, receive notifications, and even work out. The Amazfit Bip S and the Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 3 are two examples of smartwatches that offer longer battery lives at 40 and 45 days respectively. However, that’s nowhere near standard for other watches. Of the top 10 highest-ranked smartwatches currently on the market, the average lasts for 18 hours.

Battery life with GPS

Regardless of a smartwatch’s battery life, you’ll notice that the battery life significantly decreases once the GPS function is activated. The basic battery life will tell you how long the watch will hold a charge under everyday use, whereas the battery life with GPS is a more accurate indication of how long you can use the watch with GPS activated. This means that if you plan to use your smartwatch to track runs or help with directions while driving, you’ll need to also look at the battery life with the GPS activated.
