Pixel densityPixel density is a measurement of a screen's resolution, expressed as the number of pixels per inch (PPI) on the screen. A higher pixel density translates into more clarity and sharpness for the images rendered on the screen, thus improving the quality of the viewing experience.

It’s pretty common to find smartwatches with heart rate monitors these days, but smartwatches with ECGs are taking things to a whole new level. With the inclusion of ECG technology, simple smartwatches are now able to help identify atrial fibrillation, which can lead to strokes and other health issues. In short, this is an innovation that will have lasting effects on members of the community. But, do you need to shell out the cash for a smartwatch with ECG just yet? We’ve got the details.

Is a heart rate monitor the same as ECG?

No, but they’re related! ECG stands for electrocardiogram and measures the electrical activity of the heartbeat, which is a more in-depth reading of heart health than blood pressure alone. A heart rate monitor, on the other hand, only measures your heart rate in beats per minute. While not as comprehensive as an ECG, a heart rate monitor helps you assess and monitor your heart as it relates to physical activity. An ECG will provide you with more in-depth readings and is better for those who have or suspect that they have underlying heart issues that they need to monitor.

How does ECG technology work in smartwatches?

As mentioned, an electrocardiogram measures the electrical activity of the heartbeat, but how? It records the signals that your heart sends and transmits those signals into information sent to the smartwatch sensor. It’ll pass the information through an algorithm to identify whether or not there are any abnormalities or if there’s anything off that shouldn’t be. What’s it measuring exactly? The rhythm of your heartbeat, how fast it’s beating, and the state of the muscle tissue around your heart (in order to identify and alert users of a potential arrhythmia or heart attack).

It’s worth mentioning, however, that ECGs taken at a hospital in a proper medical setting are measuring much more information (and are doing so more accurately) than the ECG on your smartwatch. Smartwatches with ECG technology should never replace medically-administered ECGs.

Which smartwatches have ECG?

ECG technology was introduced into the world of smartwatches with the release of modern Apple Watches. However, other top brands have now incorporated it into their most recent releases as well, including the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 and the Fitbit Sense. If you know that you would like for your smartwatch to include ECG capabilities, narrow your search and only compare smartwatches with ECG. It will make your search easier and allow you to focus on comparing other features that will affect your decision.
